Tybee Island Council Adopts Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan
On April 14, Jason Evans, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Stetson University, gave a final presentation of the Tybee Island Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan for consideration by the Tybee Island City Council. This presentation was the capstone of a multi-year National Sea Grant-funded Community Climate Adaptation Initiative award to Georgia Sea Grant for outreach and technical assistance for sea level rise planning within the City of Tybee Island.
Diverse tools used in this project included the Vulnerability Consequences and Adaptation Planning Scenarios (VCAPS) process, the NOAA Sea Level Rise Viewer, and custom geospatial benefit-cost modeling of stormwater and shoreline stabilization action scenarios.
Recommended adaptation actions presented at the City Council meeting and contained in the final report include:
  1. Near-term elevation of the US Highway 80 causeway between Wilmington Island and Tybee Island
  2. Near-term elevation of two public water supply well houses at risk of storm surge flooding
  3. Retrofit and upgrades of stormwater infrastructure in several low-lying areas of Tybee Island
  4. Enhanced dune-field construction as part of future beach renourishment projects.
The Tybee Island Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan is available on-line.
